Makena Patterson

Intern

Makena Patterson (she/her) is a psychotherapist intern in the Master of Science in Social Work program at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently completing her clinical practicum at Roots Behavioral Health.

A native Austinite, Makena is deeply connected to the Central Texas community and committed to providing trauma-informed, compassionate care. She has significant experience supporting individuals navigating relational trauma, chronic health conditions, anxiety, and dissociation. Guided by a warm, playful, and person-centered approach, Makena values the relational foundation of therapy and works alongside her clients to foster safety, empowerment, and self-discovery.

Makena is particularly passionate about providing affirming care to LGBTQIA+ individuals, neurodivergent clients, and those in non-monogamous partnerships. She is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all identities, ways of being, and experiences are celebrated. Her therapeutic style is multimodal and tailored to each client, integrating frameworks like Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Attachment Theory. Makena views therapy as a space to embrace all parts of oneself and to rewrite the stories that shape our lives. She is honored to walk alongside her clients as they navigate healing, growth, and the rediscovery of embodiment.

Outside the therapy space, Makena enjoys exploring national parks, attending concerts, and spending time with her partner and their two cats, Charlie and Cooper.
